How to Spot Common Trailer Damage Early (and Avoid Fees)

When you rent a trailer, you’re responsible for returning it in the same condition you received it. That’s why early damage detection matters. By inspecting your trailer before and after use, you can protect yourself from unexpected charges and ensure safe operation throughout your rental.

This guide covers the most common trailer issues to look out for and how to catch them early.

1. Check the Tires First

Tires are one of the most common sources of damage and renter liability.

What to look for: - Flat spots (caused by braking too hard) - Uneven wear or bulges - Visible cords or cracking - Low tire pressure

Use a pressure gauge before driving and adjust as needed.

2. Inspect the Lights and Wiring

Lights must be fully functional to comply with Florida law.

Check: - Brake lights - Turn signals - Running lights - Electrical plug (check for corrosion or bent pins)

If a light isn’t working, try reseating the plug or inspecting the fuse before reporting it.

3. Examine the Trailer Frame & Coupler

Even minor frame issues can become major safety risks.

Inspect: - Weld cracks or visible bending - Loose bolts or rattling sounds - Coupler latch function - Safety chains, hooks, and breakaway cable

Apply light downward pressure to ensure the coupler stays secured when locked.

4. Check for Deck and Ramp Damage

On flat deck or car hauler trailers: - Look for splintering wood or deep gouges - Check for oil stains or fluid leaks - Inspect ramp hinges and locking pins for damage or bending

On enclosed trailers: - Look for dents, punctures, and interior wall scrapes - Make sure side and rear doors open and lock properly

5. Check Included Equipment

If your trailer came with straps, jacks, locks, or a spare tire: - Make sure they are all still present - Check for torn or frayed tie-down straps - Ensure locks are not jammed and keys are returned

Protect Yourself with Photos

Before using the trailer: - Take clear photos of the exterior, tires, and deck - Document any existing wear or marks

After return: - Take new photos to show condition was unchanged
